  • One of the first dry grown and mulched vineyards in Australia
  • Adopting an Integrated Pest Management system which utilised Organic and sustainable practices
  • Using minimum sprays to cause least impact on native ecology decades before it became popular
  • Resticting grape yields to .5kg /vine by hand pruning and harvesting.

WINEMAKING

A cool climate site, with harvest usually taking place from late April to mid May.

Winemaking was done on site and then completed at the winery but now varies. Riesling is all done offsite and under the supervision of Llew Knight at Granite Hills Llew is one of Australia’s greatest Riesling makers and leading cool climate specialist.

Initially only new small French oak 225L barriques were used. Over the years this has changed to a combination of new and older French oak. The main supplier used was Seguin Moreau, also Francois Freres and Dargaud and Jaegle. Generally medium toast barriques from a variety of forests. Minimalist intervention winemaking means Pinot noir received only light or no filtration. Oak maturation has varied over the years from 12 to 30 months depending on vintage.

PRODUCTION

Unfortunately during the Covid 19 Lockdown the original Pinot Noir block was sold. Since then, the Riesling block and a small plot of Pinot Noir has been retained.

As a consequence, the Pinot Noir production is now only up to 2 barriques. The Riesling yield is strictly controlled to maximise quality and is usually under
1200 bottles per year.
